Secret wedding : concerto for guitar & chamber orchestra / Marian Budos.
by Marian Budos (1997)
Secret Wedding was originally commissioned by the Lublin Philharmonic Orchestra, Poland in 1996, to be played with the guitar soloist Jan Labant. In the midst of writing this concerto, the orchestra's concert hall was damaged by huge floods and was forced to cancel the commission. Fortunately, Jan's home town orchestra, the Slovak Sinfonietta agreed to premiere this work a few years later in 2002.
The concerto was written as a wedding present for my wife. The wedding was kept secret from both our families until very close to the date to avoid any complications organising a wedding that would involve bringing together guests from two different continents. So instead, we travelled to Rome and got married in St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican and celebrated the occasion with both our families at different times.

Contemporary guitar concerto with dynamic and exciting instrumentation, full of expressions, fluid harmonies and moving melodies
After the premiere of Secret Wedding the leading Slovak music magazine Hudobny Zivot wrote: 'The composition differs in many respects from other contemporary works. It does not suffer from any scepticism, on the contrary, it is a kind of music therapy, a mirror of the author's feelings; an inner confession; presented elegantly and without any cheap effects. The work has surprising instrumentation... The composition felt really authentic...' -Marta Gaborova, Hudobny Zivot, 'Musical Life', Slovakia, July/August issue, 2002
