These miniature songs, composed for classroom music use, are based on a progressive sequence of pitches and rhythms. Each one uses a different scale or scale fragment, derived from a gradual reveal ascending from middle C, D and E, up to a compass of one octave. The only accidentals employed are F# and Bb; both because of their obvious primacy in music notation, as well as the fact that these are the 'black' notes typically supplied with diatonic Orff instruments. Teachers are strongly encouraged to use the pitch and rhythm vocabulary of these songs as a basis for further variation, composition and improvisation.
Pitch solfa has been included as a warm-up, using both chord and scale tones, and to ground students in the tonality of each song.
The Hebrew texts are taken from the medieval liturgical poem, Yigdal. The use of the Hebrew text is entirely optional for speakers of other languages.
