Product details
Simple harmonic motion is one of a set of three short studies for chamber ensemble, each focusing on a different compositional parameter. While its companion pieces, Scherzo for double trio and Magnetic Lines, are hyperactive and virtuosic, Simple harmonic motion may be thought of as the slow movement of the set. Although, as the title implies, the primary concern of the piece is with the harmonic dimension, in another sense the music is completely monophonic. The entire texture consists in the statement of a line, in the course of which each pitch in the available five-octave range (from the bass clarinet's bottom B flat to the top A in the marimba and violin) is touched upon once, allowed to sound more or less briefly with the preceding and following notes, and then discarded, never to be heard again.
