Product details
In many Australian Indigenous cultures, songlines map out the journey of spirit-beings across the landscape and are marked with traditional songs, stories, dances and painting. This piece imagines this notion of song mapping out a landscape, perhaps imagined from above.
The piece also examines a theme central to Indigenous culture, that in death, the full richness of artistic life is celebrated; hence there are sections of dance-like exhilaration as well as mourning. The piece is in three main sections: an opening statement of the songline, a ritual celebratory dance and a third solemn and sparse lament. Peter Sculthorpe's influence might be detected in the imagery and sound-world explored in this piece written while I was still a student.
