Walter Benjamin (1892-1940) a German-Jewish philosopher, essayist, critic and translator remains one of the the most original and influential literary-cultural European figures of the twentieth century. The texts fragments used in these little choral pieces are taken from the collection of essays in "One Way Street" ( Einbahnstrasse) and "Illuminations". Benjamin committed suicide on the French-Spanish border attempting to flee the Gestapo.

Street Songs was originally composed for as part of my score for "One Way Street", John Hughes's film about Walter Benjamin. It did not find its way onto the soundtrack and was subsequently performed at an Astra Concert.
Previously titled: Four choral fragments for the centenary of Walter Benjamin

Street Songs was first performed under the title "Four Choruses for Walter Benjamin's Centenary" at an Astra concert at Science Works in Melbourne on 7 November 1992 with the Astra Choir and Lawrence Whiffin (piano), conducted by John McCaughey.
