Product details
As a composer and performer I am always looking at ways of balancing individual and group creativity with written form and structure. Towards this end the first movement contains two sections which allow the performers scope and freedom to improvise and further develop some of the ideas contained within this quartet. How this is done will, I am sure, vary from group to group and even from performance to performance. It could take the form of a solo improvisation supported by simple accompaniment based on the already established material, or in any number of varied and changing combinations of ensemble members. I leave the length and form of these sections to be determined by the creativity and discriminating awareness of the performers themselves. In a similar fashion, bowings and editorial markings are sparse and intended as suggestions only. If the performers however, feel it not appropriate to improvise in either one or both sections where improvisation is indicated in the score, they can simply omit measures 60- 67 inclusive and/or measures 101 - 104 inclusive.
