Tango with a smokey twist : for solo piano / Houston Dunleay.
by Houston Dunleavy (2010)
In 1984, American pianist and specialist in new American music,
Yvar Mikashoff, conceived the idea of having composers he knew
and loved write tangos for him. In all, some 150 tangos exist now
in the collection. A number were recorded and released in 1995 on
the CD, Incantation to Desire, two years after Mikashoff's
untimely death. Since then, more pieces have been added to the
collection, which is now curated and performed by Haydée
Schwartz, one of Argentina's leading pianists.
Tango With a Smokey Twist is the only Australian piece in the International Collection so far. It takes its title from the image of smoke arising from a cigarette in the sort of dingy, back-street bar, where tango was born. The melodic line swirls around like smoke over an incessant tango-derived rhythm. Unlike a number of the works in the collection, it is meant to be danced to, and with passion!
