Product details

When Milan Osadsky approached me to write a solo accordion piece, I had already written three pieces for accordion within an ensemble setting. With The Edge of Self, I wanted to home in on one of the accordion's most characteristic features - it's unquie capacity for producing sustained notes and note clusters. The instrument is like a huge lung in that its bellows need to expand and compres in order to manufacture sound, and it is this feature of compression and expansion that goes into shaping the musical line. The Edge of Self is marked by passages of extreme stillness, while others shake with the anticipation of intense activity. It begins highly compressed, expands towards its middle to form extremely dense chords that have accumulated many notes, and finally retreats, compressing to one note. Vibrato often serves to 'resuscitate' sustained notes, producing pulsating, organic forms that cannot suffer from decay. The title of the piece takes a line from New Guinea Legend 'The Finding of the Moon' by the Australian poet Judith Wright.
