"The Flea" is from The Beasts' Choir by Carmen Bernos de Gasztold, translated by Rumer Godden. The composer has added that the work may be performed by mezzo soprano, or soprano, and pianist.

First performed at an International Society of Contemporary Music concert, 27th September 1975, at the Auditorium, New Conservatorium, Brisbane. The soprano was Jan Delpratt, Regis Danillon the accompanist.
