Product details

The words are from a traditional Irish folk song. I composed all three versions of the work, and another work Annamaghkerrig (Opus 82), during a two week composing residency at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Ireland. Thanks to the centre for this inspiring opportunity. All my composing was done outdoors, except this piece, which was composed partly indoors as it was raining that day. I was given a large studio with a piano so I could check the notes at the piano after composing with just pen and paper. This arrangement is based on my own melody and chordal setting. I had been working through Tchaikovsky's Guide to the Practical Study of Harmony before leaving Australia, however I hope the piece expresses something of my part Irish heritage, and the Irish traditional music tradition which I have been connected to in some way. For example, I sang at a traditional session in Dublin the day before going to my residency and had been doing sacred and Celtic music concerts in Melbourne, also doing private research in libraries such as the Celtic Club Library where I am a member.
