Product details

The Last to Leave was written by Leon Gellert in 1915 to commemorate the evacuation of the Gallipoli Peninsula. Gellert had fought there in the trenches until invalided out; his collection Songs of a Campaign established him as Australia's premier Great War poet. On Armistice Day 2003, this poem was read at the dedication of the Australian War Memorial in Hyde Park, London.

The music sets the words naturally, the two verses adjusted to fit a strophic sequential melody with touches of word-painting. The opening lines are reiterated in conclusion, leaving open the eternal question - 'What of these?'
