Un'impressione nel tempo or An Impression in Time was especially composed as part of a cultural exchange project between the Melbourne Composers' League (MCL) and The Japan Federation of Composers Inc. (JFC), and represents a Hommage à Earle Brown (1926-2002). The work serves as an exploration of the musical implications of indeterminacy as an organizational determinant, probability theory, combinatoriality and True Random Number Generators, as well as the post-tonal harmonic possibilities within the twelve-note chromatic scale as presented by Elliott Carter in his monumental publication of the Harmony Book, with pitch material directly derived from Elliott Carter's All-interval 4-note chords no. 18 (B, C, Eb and F) and no. 23 (B, C, D and F#), which are represented by Forte 4-Z15 (0, 1, 4, 6) and Forte 4-Z29 (0, 1, 3, 7) respectively. Two characteristic voicings (C2, G2, F#3, E4, Bb4, Ab5 and D6; and C2, G2, Bb3, Gb4, D5, F5 and C6) are presented in the work in alternate succession, framing a chaconne-like harmonic structure that essentially represents 7-note expansions of the two abovementioned 4-note chords (the additional pitches derived from their primary inversions) - a note complex consistency interrupted only by combinatorial variation. The indeterminate performance structure has been inspired by the open-form (or mobile) works of American composer Earle Brown, and in particular Novara for flute, bass clarinet, trumpet, pianoforte, 2 violins, viola and violoncello (1962) where the conductor is essentially given total freedom to "conduct the events in any sequence or juxtaposition, in changing tempi, loudness and, in general, mould and form the piece."
