You tunes / Tim Rollinson Trio
With his experience in rock and in the more avant reaches of jazz (as well as the mainstream) Rollinson has many distortion and colouristic effects at his disposal. He can play hard and gritty as well as lyrically. There is some of both on this album, but lyrical relaxation, dreaming atmospheric tones and bell-like clarity are perhaps the keynotes in this delightful conversation between friends. One of the tracks, Coral Sea Gospel, is a gentle nod to the South Pacific's own rich musical tradition, with its 6/8 soul-gospel rhythm and balmy tropical atmosphere, which like some of the other tunes has a hint of melancholy. There is a restlessness in the guitar as it edges subtly towards the blues. Other tracks are more groove-based, from funky to meditative. Three tracks are group improvisations and there is also a standard, I hear A Rhapsody, which displays the band's interactive nature.
