Work Overview

Lullaby for a Favourite Doll is one movement from the composer's Child's Play suite, written to mark the birth of his first grandchild in 1989. Despite the overall quietness that is appropriate to a lullaby there are a number of prominent discords that need to be heard, but not forced. Attention should also be paid to the subsidiary melodic fragments in the middle voice, to be played with the left hand, and care should be taken not to play so fast that these are lost. Note should also be taken of the changed rhythmic emphasis from bars 9-12 and the reappearance of this idea at bar 31.
