Work Overview
This pastorale in many ways describes the
pastoral scenes in Tasmania and the surrounds of Hobart, the
capital of Tasmania. The music is generally serene and dreamy,
although there are some technical demands required of the
soloist. The work has been influenced by composers such as Ralph
Vaughan Williams and Ernest Chausson (particularly their pieces
for violin and orchestra) and also the Beethoven Violin Concerto.
The music is a very personal expression and is thoroughly based
on modern techniques. It uses a note row of E D A Bb C C# F# F Eb
G Ab B with its many transpositions and inversions in addition to
other more complex mutations. The work is very much an untroubled
reverie for solo violin and orchestra.
