Work Overview
Ship Song is a lilting, wistful song that tells the
story of a young woman who is farewelling the sailor that she
loves, before he sets off in his ship for the high and turbulent
seas. She begins by reflecting on the sorrow of their parting,
the danger of the stormy seas, and later is overjoyed at his
eventual return.
The piece originally started out life as a song for solo soprano
and lute. It is one of the first pieces I ever composed, and
dates back to the time that I began to develop an interest
composing and songwriting in my early senior high school years. I
was delighted to premiere this with my Cantus girls choir at
Mansfield State High School, who enjoyed the process of putting
this piece together.
