Work Overview
The Blackwood River Concerto is a double concerto for guitar and marimba/vibraphone with orchestra (double winds). It is cast in the traditional three movements with the central slow movement scored for guitar and vibraphone and the peripheral movements scored for guitar and marimba.
The Blackwood River Concerto was commissioned by guitarist Craig Ogden and percussionist Paul Tanner in 2002. Ogden was the special guest artist for the Blackwood River Chamber Festival, April 2002, at which I was Composer in Residence and commissioned by Festival director Vincent Meleta to compose a guitar quartet, the Blackwood River Suite (2001). The Blackwood River Concerto was recorded on November 28, 2022, with soloists Jonathan Fitzgerald, guitar and percussionist Paul Tanner accompanied by the Perth Symphony Orchestra, directed by Sara Duhig.
