Work Overview
In Perfect, Perfect Pitch (Libra song) is a contemporary art song set for Mezzo-Soprano voice or Baritone voice. It is the seventh song in Margaret Brandman's 'Cosmic Wheel of the Zodiac' Song Cycle. The lyrics are by astrologer and poet Benita Rainer who has artfully distilled the individual characteristics of this star sign in her text.
Libra's scales are constantly attempting to restore harmony and good fellowship to humankind.
"For we must be attuned in Perfect, Perfect Pitch". This gentle, flowing song begins in A Major with and features Major 7th harmonies, but with a change of key in the final section, it concludes in G Major. The use of multiple changing time signatures helps to enhance the flow of the melody, which is frequently shared between the voice and piano. The song ends with a final flourish capturing the lyrics 'Until our scales align, in quintessential beauty'.
