Simple opening andante section, with sustained melodic lines from the upper strings, accompanied by a pizzicato figure from the celli, which passes through an accelerando into a gentle 'poco allegro': a solo melody line from the celli over murmuring accompaniment from the other strings. (Based on simple finger exercise patterns). As with most journeys in life, it returns to the opening andante, a little bit wiser, and musically complete!
Instrumentation: Strings, marimba (optional).
Duration: 3 min.
Difficulty: Easy — Relatively simple rhythms, but some tempo changes. In my experience, most beginner groups can handle them though.
Commission note: Written specifically for a music camp when I saw the completely inappropriate material that was available for a beginners string group.
