Work Overview

I composed Tri in 1969 to ascertain if the year I had just spent in Messiaen's composition class at the Paris Conservatoire had left any mark. I feel it did not, but there were two works whose influence I am happy to acknowledge - Luciano Berio's Sequenza I for flute, and Edgar Varèse's Density 21.5, written for the platinum flute. Both of these influences are present, digested and absorbed, I hope, to make Tri into the sort of piece that demonstrates the brilliant agility of the instrument and its supreme singing ability. Tri, in French, means "a sorting out".
