Work Overview

Goldbrick Oilslick was composed specfically for performance by youth/university orchestras. The individual lines are pretty straight forward, and the whole is certainly more complex than the sum of its parts. The piece could be thought of as an inexorable build to a massive climax. The piece begins with a number of tiny gestures in what is almost A minor... but not quite. Seemingly inconsequential, they continue over and over against the backdrop of an increasingly chaotic string section. The chaos builds, and the listener begins to notice that the individual motifs are beginning to merge into more unified gestures, punctuated by larger and larger climactic smashes. The percussion kicks in, the volume goes up, until finally, without really understanding how we got here, the whole orchestra is playing together as an enormous, gloriously raucous band. The long awaited climax happens, and the piece comes to a thunderous end.
