Work Overview
ChIMPS No. 1 was born out of my ongoing interest in the intersection between composition and improvisation. After employing aspects of improvisation within larger notated sections in my earlier works, I wanted to go a step further in ChIMPS No 1 by giving improvisers a system that allowed them to successfully construct a performance, without taking away all control from the composer.
The piece utilises a graphic notational system built upon the concept of 'significance'. This requires the performer to determine whether an action or consequence is deemed to be significant at any given moment, and within the larger context of the piece. These actions are related to a number of musical factors; dynamics, timbre, rhythm, pitch and intervals, note duration and timbre. Each of these factors has been codified within the notational system, and the application of the system is outlined in detail in the performance notes.
ChIMPS No. 1 was composed under the guidance of Professor George E. Lewis, whilst I was undertaking postgraduate work at UCSD in San Diego, California. It is rightfully dedicated to him
