Work Overview

This is one of a series of settings that the composer has undertaken to celebrate the work of the Australian "peasant-poet" John Shaw Neilson (1870-1942.) The native companion is the Brolga. Hill recalls observing these awe-inspiring, man-high birds at their courtship rituals in a mangrove swamp near Mackay, Qld. and has attempted to capture their peculiar loping movements in the accompaniment. The evolution of this song depends on finding scales and modes linking indirectly related triads, a feature of some forms of jazz.

Other works in "The Neilson Project" include Take Down the Fiddle,Karl; The Cool Sailor; and The Smoker Parrot.
