Work Overview

Immersed in a wealth of velvety red and prestige gold, the Olsen Foyer at the Arts Centre Melbourne is a place for the general meets and greets - before, during and after a performance that takes place in the theatre behind the doors. The paintings, in their vibrant colors and distinct features, are hung on the walls around the space, positioned between the reflective mirrors, behind the red couches and red lamps with golden legs. In referencing some of the most well-known operas, the paintings, to me, seem to project the loudest and most resonant kind of inaudibility, constantly interjected by the chatters, clinking glasses and all the other sounds that inhabits the room every-so-often.

The 'tape' component of this work was recorded in the space on the 11th of May 2013, before, during and after a particular matinee performance of an opera. I would like to acknowledge all of those who were present in the room during this time, allowing me to source my inspirations from the sonic atmosphere they have collectively created. Particularly, the gentleman who, despite rushing to his seat in haste before the door shuts, acknowledged to his companion the very essence of this room with one brilliant remark.
