Work Overview

My Concerto for Viola and String Orchestra was commissioned and first performed by the late Peter Komlos, the leader of the viola section of the T.S.O.

Completed in February 1973 it was performed soon after with the strings of the T.S.O. conducted by Vanco Chadvarsky. The recording was broadcast by the A.B.C.

In three movements, with cadenzas in both the 1st and 3rd movements, I initially named it Concert Music for Viola and String Orchestra. Peter convinced me to change the title, thus beginning a cycle of seven concerti to date. The 2nd movement, Cavatina, was inspired by the view from Bonnett Hill near Kingston, Tasmania, looking south to the mouth of the River Derwent on a serene summer's day, briefly interrupted by threatening weather before returning to the initial stillness and serenity. Both outer movements are vigorous and exuberant.
