Work Overview

Commissioned by the Tasmanian Symphony Chamber Players with assistance from the Performing Arts Board of The Australia Council in 1989. Winner of the Sounds Australia Award in 1989.

This one movement work with a 12 minute time span is designed to contrast small ensemble (concertante) activity with the larger ensemble as well as involving all players as one ensemble (tutti). It's generally light and rhythmic qualities, characteristic of many dance forms, suggest a sense of joyousness relieved briefly by a more delicate, meditative phase and later by a cadenza-like section for the soloists before a compressed recapitulation and coda.

Editors note: This work was originally written for the Tasmanian Symphony Chamber Players whose orchestration was the indicated minimum orchestration. In this new typeset version the solo lines have been separated from the tutti lines and indications of (solo) and (tutti) have been added to the contrabass to enable this wonderful work to be more accessible to larger ensembles
