Work Overview

I've sub-titled my 7th piano sonata 'of the night' because throughout its composition I had images stemming from nocturnal thoughts, in a very broad sense. A suggestion of evening ruminations, perhaps during a stroll, pervaded the first movement, marked andante. The inevitable approach of darkness, almost by stealth and sense of uncertainty, dominated the delicatissimo central movement with a middle section of movement and lightness before the return of uncertainty. The final movement, misterioso, was motivated by the profound mystery of deep night with clear starlight skies. Throughout both the 2nd and 3rd movements the use of the often unrelieved sustaining pedal creates the effect of sweeping washes of sound.
