Work Overview

The work takes its inspiration from the life of Matthew Flinders who circumnavigated and mapped Tasmania and mainland Australia (which he named) in the late 18th and early 19th centuryand who died in 1814. His journals describe the different coastal landscapes of Australia in great detail; he encountered Aboriginal, French and Malay people at various points on the coast, experienced privation and shipwreck and, en route to England, was incarcerated in French Mauritius for 6 years. Apart from his cat, his best companion was his flute, and this work seeks to evoke some of the awe at the alien landscapes he discovered, but is threaded by some of the music he knew and probably played, by Pleyel, Hoffmeister, Devienne, and a little tune he attributed to Haydn.
