My favourite Australian art song repertoire
Posted by Australian Music Centre on 22 July, 2013
The AMC asked leading practitioners to select their favourite Australian art song repertoire, to provide delegates to the 2013 International Conference of Vocal Teachers (Brisbane 2013) with an introduction to this rich and diverse landscape.
A substantial work for mezzo soprano, allowing scope for great dynamic range and vocal colour. In three movements, on the poetry of Seamus Heaney (Glanmore Sonnet), Gwen Harwood (A Game of Chess) and Gerard Manley Hopkins (The Windhover), each focuses on elements in the natural landscape. The quartet often provides a lush accompaniment to the sustained vocal lines but is still sensitively attuned to the poetic intent, using extended techniques to great effect. For example in The Windhover, every nuanced and unexpected movement of the falcon in flight is sensitively captured and yet the singer can feel supported throughout as the work soars to its climax.
