Work Overview

Drawing inspiration from the evocative and directly beautiful works of the American 'vernacular' artist Mafield Parrish, the Nocturnes are a sensual indulgence, expressed in a language this is richly poetic.

In their impressionistic quality, the Nocturns are clearly discernible as proceeding from earlier works like Rainforest, which had established the composer's reputation as a creator of rich orchestral sonorities and gestures.

— James Koehne
