Work Overview

This one act opera is set on a beach. The libretto features mad birds, hard-faced polluters, and a strange, crazed creature (female) as interlocutor. The chorus fulfills a classical choric function as well as that of the birds on the beach.

Work Details

Year: 2009

Instrumentation: Major roles: Mezzo soprano; 4 baritones; chorus (SATB), flute, alto flute, bass flute, clarinet in Bb, bass clarinet in Bb, contrabass clarinet in Bb, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, percussion (3 players), harp, piano, strings (2.2.2.2.2). One dancer.

Duration: 60 min.

Depending upon the total choral resources available the role of 'birds' and that of 'chorus' may be undertaken by the same single body of voices. When resources allow, 'birds' and 'chorus' may be two differentiated groups. It is also conceivable that there may be a third group of non-singing 'birds' who undertake only the spoken passages. However, the piece is organised such that a single group of singers can fulfill all choral roles.
