Work Overview

Two paintings hang side by side on my wall - both abstract works but other than that, apparently quite dissimilar. One was painted by the Australian artist Yvonne Audette in 1957, the other, by the French painter Jacques Pasquier in 1990

However, juxtaposed as closely as they are, they start to reveal similarities not evident at first or even second sight. As I look at them I not only observe the internal contrasts and balances that each painter has created but I begin to notice the coincidental similarities between the two.

These thoughts have given rise to the idea for the current piece. It is not meant as a literal metamorphosis into sound of the two paintings but more a reflection on the nature of their chance encounter. To this end I have effectively written two pieces of music which are performed alongside each other, never heard simultaneously but alternating; sometimes in more or less substantial passages, at other times as the one, interrupted by brief interjections from the other. On some occasions the difference is exploited to the full and on others, a similarity is investigated such that the transition may go almost unnoticed.
