Work Overview

Fanfare for the Muses was commissioned to open the Second Composing Women Festival in Melbourne June 29th 1994 as thanks for inaugurating the first Composing Women's Festival. The piece was written for The Muses, a group of nine Melbourne singers led by Jeannie Marsh. For this festival, seven short poems circa 600 BCE by Sappho, translated by Mary Barnard, form the basis of the work. Each of the nine female voices carries their own line. The harmonies move through various Greek modes. As the primary icon of this work is the moon, the piece explore space and sound with circular musical and spatial motifs.

The original premiere involved The Muses dancing and spreading out antiphonally from The Malthouse balcony down a ladder to conclude this vocal fanfare and bless the festival with modern women's voices sounding from an ancient tradition.
