Work Overview
Gravity is a short piano work that has a clear audible relationship to the concept of gravity. It begins in the upper register of the piano with a two-note rhythmical figure based on the notes G# and A and ends with this same figure in the lower register of the instrument. The trajectory from high to low is broken by an intervening middle section that explores asymmetric pulse layers and melodic material. Written for the Pure Poetry Project, Gravity forms part of a series of works that relate to contemporary Australian poetry. The title was chosen after Ross Gillett's poem Trajectory, which in turn had been written as a response to another piano work of mine for this project called In a Close Orbit.
