In a close orbit : for solo piano / Anthony Lyons.
Library shelf no. 786.2/LYO 2 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
In a Close Orbit for solo piano began as a craft exercise inspired to some degree by György Ligeti's piano work White on White from his third book of piano preludes. Similarly to Ligeti's piece, In a Close Orbit uses only the white notes of the piano. The entire piece is built on of a recurring two-bar figure of only four notes (E, F, G, A). This left-hand structure was conceived as a fixed 'orbit' upon which right-hand melodic fragments would unfold contrapuntally against it. The title of In a Close Orbit seemed to capture a sense of the inner and outer worlds of the music that emerged - with the different orbits of the hands reflecting an ongoing interest of mine in the simultaneous layering of static and non-static materials.
