Work Overview

This piece was inspired by the glorious, but now non-existant Garden Palace, which was an exhibition hall built in 1871 in the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney, and covered the vast area roughly between where the Conservatorium and the State Library are now. It housed all sorts of items on display; exhibitions from the various states of Australia, overseas collections, and many Aboriginal artifacts. At the time, it boasted of having the 4th largest dome in the world, underneath which stood a statue of Queen Victoria. This song depicts the sense of all this jumble of objects and history going up in flames around the queen and under the dome, when it burned down a mere 3 years after construction began.
