Work Overview
The pitch material of Carobne or 'Magical' (a chord progression consisting of 12 simultaneous sonorities) has been directly derived from Elliott Carter's catalogue of all-interval 'symmetrical inverted' 12-note chords (documented in The Harmony Book), while nine of the simple 7-limit frequency ratios associated with the chromatic scale form the basis for rhythmic development. The ABA arch form structure of the work is framed at the centre with the appearance of a quotation of Lijepa Nasa Domovino (Our Beautiful Homeland), or the Croatian national anthem. The melodic materials of Lijepa Nasa Domovino are presented as tempo canons (or diminution canons, expressed as polyrhythmic ratios: 4/5/6, or the major triad; in conjunction with 10/12/15, or the minor triad; and 4/6/9, or the superimposition of two perfect fifths. The complete canonic structure of the nine-part inverted canon is represented by the ratio 24/27/30/32/36/40/42/64/96. The work also serves as an exploration of the musical properties of American mathematician and author Paul C. Pasles' Square Deal II (2006) 'Franklin' 4x4 magic square (1+5+16+12, 4+8+13+9, 14+10+3+7 and 15+11+2+6), which characteristically has a magic constant of 34 although features bent rows and columns, or more specifically, bent-diagonal sums equal to 34, as opposed to a magic constant represented by the two straight diagonals.
