Work Overview

This music falls into two sections. In 'des Oiseaux', fantastic birdcalls provide the thematic material and something of the dramatic character of the music, while 'la Danse' is a short, ecstatic dance of high energy and constantly changing metres.
The modern flute seems to have been born in France around the turn of the twentieth century. The confluence of winning instrument design, wonderful players and pedagogues, and inspired composers put the flute on the musical map as never before. In the next generation, Olivier Messiaen composed Le Merle Noir for a competition. All of this background played on my mind, as did Henri Matisse's series of paintings La Danse, Nasturtiams et 'la Danse', etc - the inspiration for the diptych format of this work.
