Work Overview
This piece was inspired by Cage's book "Silence", by Pauline Oliveros, and by Warren Burt's piece "Thoreau Fragments" which is for soprano, violin, and flute. I sang the soprano part for Warren's piece when the work was recorded by ABC Radio. Catherine Schieve when we were walking once suggested it was best to listen to the kookaburra, rather than talk over it, and I have sung along with the kookaburra and other birds ever since. (I had already been dancing with nature every day since working with Pak Suprapto Suryodarmo in Java). The piece hopefully also has a sense of the naturalness of nature, and draws on Caccini's "Le Nuove Musiche" for the trillo. This is similar to my work "For Gitta" for singer and violin.
