Work

Victimae paschali laudes, op. 65 : for soprano or mezzo-soprano and piano : soprano voice with piano

by Jacqui Rutten (2014)

Work Overview

The piece is from the Liber Usualis and tells of the risen Lord and is sung on Easter Sunday. I was thinking of the Easter Sunday uprising in Ireland which led to irish independence when first considering setting the piece.
I recently performed this as a piece of solo chant for a lunchtime concert at St. Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne. I love the piece and have been granted a composing residency in May 2015 at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre Ireland to compose a piece called Memorial for soprano and orchestra, based on this sequence and my own improvisations as nature. I thought I would do a voice and piano arrangement first to get to know the piece really well.
