Work Overview

Among Sculthorpe's earliest surviving 'Tasmanian' compositions is a series of song settings drawing on English pastoral poetry. Dating from perhaps 1944 and 1945, some of these he subsequently arranged for a Launceston music teacher, Joyce Ball, to perform with her string quartet. In 1945, during his last year at Launceston Grammar School, these arrangements were gathered together to form the movements of what he called his String Quartet No 1.

Though no original scores have survived, Sculthorpe remebers that the contents of this first quartet probably varied from one performance to the next, and may never have been finalised formally.
