Work Overview

It had long been the composer's desire to create a commemorative work, in honour of the sacrifice of the service men and women of the Australian Armed Forces.

Sheridan's own family has a proud history of armed service. His grandfather fought in Europe in the Great War, in the First Forty Third. His father, served in the Royal Australian Air Force in Signals, during the Second World War, and subsequently went on to work for the Department of Defence for over thirty years.

The work was written with the specific intent that it could be played at solemn services, and commemorative events for service men and women. The piece, which is roughly divided into three sections, (slow, fast, slow), provides the listener, with the opportunity for silent reflection and quiet contemplation; the final section being a lyrical series of variations of the music of 'The Last Post'.
