Work Overview
As True is a reflective modal piece that develops into a feature improvisation for the pianist supported by the bass player and drummer. On the CD recording Not Everything but Enough, As True begins with a repeated musicbox sample ostinato in the key of A minor. This is not essential and can be omitted from the performance. The drummer sets the mood with a repeated sixteenth note (semi-quaver) rhythm played on the snare drum using brushes.
The piano cues are written and occur in sequence but can be played at any time. They are modally based, clearly tonal and to be played in a gentle fashion. The double bass improvised a gentle sustained part.
Towards the end of the piece a harmonic sequence is constantly repeated as a foundation for the pianist to improvise over. The double bass and drummer can play more dynamically here and develop the accompaniment. The soloist cues a return to a simple melody over this sequence to finish.
