Work Overview
Miss Ruddock's Variations were composed as incidental music for a performance of Alan Bennett's Lady of Letters. The seven short variations originate from the same basic harmonic structure (though this is used flexibly) and some also share rhythmic and motific ideas. The concept was to reflect a series of different psychological states of a single character. Several variations also evoke hints of other composers and pieces.
