Work Overview
This piece is based on the traditional East Timorese song Kolele Mai. In 1975, new words were written by Timorese resistance poet Francisco Borja da Costa, who was murdered by invading Indonesian soldiers on Dec 7 1975. The song became a rallying point for East Timorese people working for independence. In 1999, the people were finally granted a vote for, on the one hand, independence or, on the other, autonomy within Indonesia. They courageously voted for independence. The Indonesian military - the TNI - and its militia terrorised the nation before leaving, forcing hundreds of thousands of Timorese to go with them. In 2002, East Timor finally became, formally, an independent nation. I hoped that Kolele Mai would bring attention to East Timor's culture.
