Work Overview
There is a work by Elliot Carter called Night Fantasies about a person having half waking thoughts and feelings in the middle of the night. I have taken a different angle on this. I imagine a person lying waiting, close to death. This music a last lullaby to help them die. The violin suggests a metabolism slowing, yet the mind is still hugely active as the piano suggests. This person (as in the Carter) has a range of passing feelings and half thoughts: perhaps they are memories, good and bad. In the end the cycles of their body wind down as they enter a last long sleep.
