Work Overview

Vertigo for clarinet and alto saxophone was composed in 2005 and revised in 2013 for an ABC Classic FM radio broadcast performed by David Rowden (clarinet) and Katia Beaugeais (saxophone). It was broadcast on an ABC program featuring Beaugeais' music in 2010.
Vertigo is in three movements and can be performed separately. It is also available for different flute, clarinet, oboe and saxophone duo combinations.

This piece depicts the feelings when suffering from vertigo. This is portrayed by the use of ostinatos, juxtaposition of complex rhythms and constant changes of tempi.
A sense of calm only occurs in the second movement. This is a very lyrical, song-like and atmospheric movement.
This work features extended techniques to explore the unique range of textural and timbral effects that both instruments can create. Clear instructions/fingerings for the avant-garde techniques are displayed in the music. For saxophone players who cannot slap-tongue, a substitution is provided.
