Work Overview

There is a secluded rainforest walk nestled at the end of Currumbin Valley QLD. Approaching it, you pass a picturesque, craggy, escarpment. The walk itself follows Currumbin creek, which starts as a trickle, then turns into rapids and widens into a stream that eventually meets the ocean.

This piece is my poetic imagining of the spirit of this place, an evocation the escarpment and the creek with its journey to the ocean.

I would like to acknowledge the Yugambeh people who are the traditional custodians of this land, and pay my respects to the elders past and present of the Yugambeh nation.

My music unfolds in three parts. The first is mountainous, slow moving, and expansive. It features a low bass ostinato that rhythmically expands and contracts, a chorale of slow moving modal chords, and rippling Major 2nd figures that float up into the ether.

The second part explores water in its many guises: a trickle that turns into a rippling stream, raindrops, a deep and dangerous current, a current that pushes up against the river bank. The music in this section is mercurial, changeable and moves in bursts. This section flows in three waves or bursts of movement.

The last part is a slow-moving chorale with an ascending ground bass melody that moves up into the ether. This section is full of sweetness and is inspired by feelings of deep relaxation and peace that can be experienced in nature. When I sit amongst the trees in Currumbin Valley, I feel I've come home. This music tries to capture this feeling.

At two moments in the piece, you'll hear a striking birdcall-like musical figure. It's inspired by the cry of the Brown Goshawk, which was the first sound I heard when arriving at Gretel Farm in Bangalow, the location for the premiere of this piece.
