Work Overview

Two Worlds was originally written for classical and semi-acoustic guitars. 'Home" is the last of 4 movements. The piece was written in 1996, shortly before my first visit back to Europe after moving to Australia almost 4 years earlier. This was an emotional and exciting time - the images of family reunion strongly influenced my writing, most evidently in last last movement subtitles 'Song for the Loved Ones'.

The title Two Worlds describes the duel existence I felt at the time - torn between Australia and Europe, as well as the two different music worlds - classical and non-classical - represented by the two different guitars and their respective musical influences evident in the piece.

This piece was premiered by my former teacher Jan Labant on classical guitar and myself on semi-acoustic guitar at the "Dny Klasicke Gitary" festival at the Hukvaldy Castle in the Czech Republic in May 1996, and shortly after that, it was also recorded for The Slovak National Radio. The Slovakian government's leading music agency Slovkoncert organised a series of concerts across Slovakia in 1997 for our trio (soprano Ivana Troselj and 2 guitars) which also featured Two Worlds. This was followed by a tour of Australia in 1999.

The piece also won the prestigious SOZA Young Composer of the Year Award (Slovakia's highest music award) in 1998 and I flew to the capital Bratislava to receive the award in a televised programme broadcast by the main Slovak TV channel. The entire composition was also recorded by Slovak TV for their archives and the whole ceremony was televised repeatedly across the nation. The composition was later released on the Two Worlds CD in 1999 and has been played numerously on the Slovak Radio.
