Work Overview
Clarinet Concerto No.1 was written for a solo clarinet with wind
band accompaniment. It is quite a demanding piece for the
clarinet, however would be playable by your most dynamic solo
clarinet player. Simple melodies interweave throughout the band,
with tutti sections all relatively 'tonic and dominant' melodic
progressions.
Gaining a high-distinction in the assessment, it was written as
an Australian university composition assignment with the briefing
'to be written for a solo instrument in the Classical Period
style of 1730-1820' which is generally accepted in Western Music
as the Classical Period.
As the tutti sections are heavily scored in some areas, do not
let these sections overpower the soloist. If you have the full
complement of wind band instrumentation, either all can play
lightly or just have one per part.
